It’s happening, folks. The earth is finally tilting toward the sun again, and things are warming up in Western North Carolina. Once we can get out and start enjoying the season, we can’t wait to sip craft beers at some of our favorite Asheville NC breweries. With our focus on the horizon and summer right around the corner, we’ve made a list of the breweries we can’t wait to try!
Asheville NC Breweries
Whether you’re looking for space to spread out, catch up with friends, listen to live music, or enjoy some tasty bar snacks, we’ve found your new favorite spot in Asheville NC to hang out this summer.
Wicked Weed Brewing
As one of the most popular Asheville NC breweries, Wicked Weed Brewing is a staple on many brewery tours. They opened their first location in 2012, exploring west-coast IPAs and barrel aged beers, and have since expanded to four locations in Asheville, including a fine dining restaurant.
Wicked Weed brewers developed a special interest in sour beers and in 2014 opened the Funkatorium in South Slope to pursue a program dedicated to that inspiration. They are best known for their diverse sours and uniquely flavored beers, paired excellently with rich food made with locally grown ingredients. Although this might be one of the most popular places in town, they’re famous for a reason and are well worth the visit!
Founded in 2005, Pisgah Brewing is a spacious brewery located in Black Mountain, NC. A short distance away from popular Asheville NC breweries, Black Mountain makes up for the commute with beautiful views and fresh mountain air. Pisgah Brewing’s founders chose this location because they believe crisp mountain water makes better beer, and they might be right! Using all organic grains and malts, Pisgah’s bright and flavorful beer really shines.
Their Black Mountain brewery is home to an indoor stage and outdoor music venue, a 9-hole disc golf course, and a variety of food trucks to fuel your beer tasting. If you’re looking for a place to spread out and enjoy fresh air and fresh brews, you have to check out Pisgah Brewing.
Highland Brewing is one of the oldest Asheville NC breweries. It’s been an independent and family-owned craft brewery since 1994. As a pillar in the community, they partner with local charities including the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, the WNC Nature Center, the local food bank and humane society.
Highland Brewing has made a commitment to serve Asheville in a way that is sustainable and, of course, tasty. Highland Brewing’s specialty is their Gaelic Ale, but they also make various fruity IPAs and dark and malty staples like their Oatmeal Porter and Black Mocha Stout. In addition to their indoor tasting room, Highland Brewing recently opened a huge rooftop bar that can fit up to 300 people, which is available for booking for private parties.
Thirsty Monk Brewery
Thirsty Monk’s flagship in Downtown Asheville opened back in 2008. Their claim to fame is their selection of Belgian-rooted modern ales. They pair an English-style beer menu with a wide variety of comfort food that includes burgers, tacos, wings, hand pies, meatloaf, and salads. As a top beer destination in Asheville known for their rare beers, business has been good. They’ve expanded to a Biltmore Park location in NC and also opened taprooms in Denver, CO and Portland, OR.
Thirsty Monk Brewery’s beer selection is always rotating, so you’ll have to stop in to see what’s available. Enjoy a few rounds with friends and explore one of the best menus of all the Asheville NC breweries.
Bhramari Brewing Company
Formerly known as Hive Mind, this exciting addition to the colorful scene of Asheville NC breweries opened in 2016. The company chose to rebrand as Bhramari Brewing Company, named after the Hindu goddess of bees, to express their experimental nature and pursuit of eccentric and unconventional flavors. Their unique ways of brewing have resulted in an extraordinary menu with flavor combinations such as a farmhouse ale aged in red wine barrels with ripe mango, a stout with peanut butter, chocolate, and banana, and a gose with strawberry, mango, toasted coriander, black salt, and lactose.
Known for their fun taproom environment, Bhramari Brewing Company is a great place to gather with friends and try something really, really new. For non beer drinkers they also offer an equally experimental cocktail menu as well as a selection of local wines.
Hendersonville NC Breweries
If you want to avoid the popular spots of Asheville, but still enjoy some of the region’s tastiest brews, visit Hendersonville, Asheville’s southern neighbor. Hendersonville has a quaint but bustling downtown with many top-notch local NC breweries, including our favorites, Southern Appalachian Brewery and Sanctuary Brewing Company.
Southern Appalachian Brewery
Located in Downtown Hendersonville, just 20 miles south of Asheville, this microbrewery offers the major beer varieties such as amber ales, stouts and IPAs, as well as exciting seasonal brews, barrel-aged ales and sours. Southern Appalachian Brewery’s taproom is laid-back, family and dog-friendly, and features live music, art shows, and other special events. This Hendersonville brewery has a food truck on site to pair with your beer selection and is the perfect place to spend a relaxing summer afternoon with family and friends.
Sanctuary Brewing Company
Sanctuary Brewing Company is one of our favorite Hendersonville breweries, and also one of the best in the region. Their owners have many years of experience in some of the top breweries in the state, and couple their knowledge with a deep kindness for their community through charitable projects. They have a special place in their hearts for animals, as they also run their own animal sanctuary near town.
Drink with a cause at Sanctuary Brewing Company and enjoy hoppy IPAs, light and fruity ales, malty dark stouts, and rare barrel-aged beer. Enjoy an all-vegan menu from the recently-launched Inconceivable Cafe where you can choose from small plates and snacks as well as entrees like plant-based burgers and rotating seasonal cupcake flavors. With live music every night and a comfortable community atmosphere, it won’t be hard to support this Hendersonville brewery to help them care for their farm-living friends.
